From
Director Joan Robins:
The recent
resurgence of Jewish life led by Washington and Lee Hillel has brought the
University to approve the building of a Center for Jewish Life. A site central
to the campus and to the community has been selected (Washington Street, next to
the RE Lee Episcopal church.) The Center will have a residential character to
reflect the architecture of the street. It will contain offices, a study space,
a lounge, and a multipurpose room for services and other meetings/celebrations.
The university is exploring the creation of a cafe on the "garden level" of the
Center that would open onto a terrace.
Efforts are beginning to raise the estimated $4 million cost of the Center and
an endowment for its maintenance. Construction will begin as soon as the funds
are raised. Students, faculty, staff, and the local community are all extremely
excited about this wonderful news!
